You have questions…
We have answers.
Sex therapy brings up a lot of questions! That's completely normal. Below are answers to the most common ones.
Getting Started
-
Fill out our contact form and we'll respond within 48 hours. Choose a therapist you like, or we'll match you with the right therapist based on your needs. Your free consultation is typically scheduled within 1 week.
-
A consultation is a brief phone call (usually 15-20 minutes) where you and your therapist get to know each other, discuss what brings you to therapy, and determine if it's a good fit. Consultations are free and don't require any commitment.
Your first session is a full therapy session (45-75 minutes) where you'll dive deeper into your concerns, goals, and begin developing a treatment plan together. First sessions are paid sessions.
-
Yes! We offer both in-person sessions at our Brooklyn and Manhattan offices, and secure HIPAA-compliant video sessions for clients throughout New York State.
-
Your first session is where you and your therapist will explore what brings you to therapy in depth. You'll discuss your goals, your history, and what you're hoping to work on. This is also your chance to ask questions about the therapeutic process. Think of it as the beginning of building a relationship with your therapist.
-
Individual sessions are typically 45-50 minutes. Couples and polycule sessions are typically 50-75 minutes.
-
Most clients meet weekly, especially when starting therapy. As you progress, you and your therapist may decide to meet at a different cadence based on your needs and goals.
Insurance, Fees, & Payment
-
We don't take insurance directly, but 70% of our clients get reimbursement from their insurance companies.
Here's how it works:
You pay for sessions at the time of service
We provide you with a "superbill" (a detailed receipt)
You submit the superbill to your insurance company
Your insurance company reimburses you based on your out-of-network benefits
We're happy to help you understand your benefits and navigate the reimbursement process.
Questions to ask your insurance about out-of-network mental health benefits:
What is my out-of-network deductible?
How much of my out-of-network deductible has already been met?
What is my policy period?
What is my co-insurance?
(If they ask for a CPT code: Individual Sessions = 90834, Couples/Family Sessions = 90847)
How do I submit for reimbursement?
How long do I have to submit my superbill?
-
Depending on the level of experience of the therapist (Social Work Intern through Doctorate level clinician), fees range from $100-$500 per session.
Sliding scale available: We offer a limited number of sliding scale spots based on financial need. Learn more about sliding scale fees here. Please mention sliding scale when requesting a consultation.
-
We accept credit cards and debit cards. Payment is processed securely following each session.
-
We require at least 48 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours notice, or missed sessions without notice, will be charged the full session fee. However, we understand that emergencies happen. Please reach out to your therapist if you have extenuating circumstances.
About Sex Therapy
-
Sex therapy is similar to other forms of therapy conducted in a safe, and confidential setting by a trained and licensed therapist. The therapist provides education about anatomy and physiology, physical response and arousal patterns, and other pertinent sexual information specific to the client’s concerns. This form of therapy is geared to the sexual concerns of the client(s). Under no circumstances does sex therapy involve any sexual or inappropriate contact between the therapist and the client.
-
Sex therapy is very similar to conventional psychotherapy; the difference is that sex therapists have additional training on how to help people with sexual concerns. We are certified, or working towards certification, by the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists.
-
There is absolutely no sexual touch between the therapist and the client.
-
Nothing is required, but we will ask personal historical information to help us understand how you became the person you are today. So much of what is worked through in sex therapy is negative messaging we have received from family and society that holds us back from our own happiness.
-
Do you struggle with intimacy? Acceptance of yourself? Authenticity? Have issues with sexual function that are not biological in nature? These are just a few of the common reasons people seek out a sex therapist.
